Cette maladie obstétricale peut avoir des conséquences extrêmement graves sur la mère et sur l’enfant à naître (retard de croissance, faible poids à la naissance, prématurité, etc…). Elle est une cause fréquente de mortalité maternelle, fœtale ou néonatale, surtout dans les pays en voie de développement. Elle serait également responsable d’un tiers des naissances de grands prématurés.
La seule solution efficace pour traiter la prééclampsie est l’accouchement.
